Urr
Urr
This is an old revision of the document!
Every 7 years, the Redbeards hold an all Redbeard Congress that elects the members of the Central Committee of Elders, that will guide and govern the Redbeards for the next term of 7 years. From the elected members, the Prince Secretary of all Redbeards is chosen or reaffirmed. By tradition, Comerade Prince Secretary is usually reaffirmed. Actual changes in this position are rare, and sometimes, a son might succeed his father.
The Central Committee has the following positions:
As the Redbeards are the largest Dwarven population near Urr, they have several large and small dwellings in and under the Green Hills. The most important dwelling and capital of the Redbeards is called the Hill of the Seven Towers.
The Redbeards have their largest dwelling and capital at a day's march southwest of Urr, deep in the Green Hills. The princedom is centered around a large hill crowned by seven towers. On the top of the hill is the People's Tower where they receive their important guests. Around the People's Tower are 3 groups of two towers.
To the north (roughly in the direction of Urr) are the Merchant's Towers. To the south east are the iron deposits and the Blacksmith's Towers. To the south west are meadows where the Redbeards keep their cattle and the Farmer's Towers.
These towers were built before building the wall of Urr and have a similar strength. From these towers you can enter the tunnels of the Dwarven capital. Every entrance has a hall that is undermined on purpose to block the entrance in case that a tower is conquered.
The real homes of the dwarves are in the tunnels in the hill. The dwarves live in three triangles around the meeting hall of the council. The meeting hall of the council is located under the People's Tower.
In a sense Urr is as much our city as it is the city of the tall folk who descended from its founders. It's not as cozy as the tunnels of The Hill of The Seven Towers, but most of the stone buildings in Urr have been built by Redbeard masons. Lots of Redbeards live permanently in the City and are as much citizens of Urr as of the Princedom.
The people of Urr are fair traders and our relation with Urr is good. They can also be incredibly lazy, but that's humans for you. They pay decent prices for the work done by the redbeards and welcome the other races in the vale.
They have a weird political system where they give all the citizens the right to vote for the city council, but don't share the profits of the city equally.
Also there is this strange ziggurat in the center of the city. We're not complaining, we got payed well to build the bloody thing, but Why!? A waste of resources if we ever saw one.
There is frugality and there is misery.
There is eagerness and there is greedyness.
There are The Redbeards and there are The Longbeards.
They are just to weird to understand, but they seem to be happy.
We wouldn't care that much about what they are doing, but many a young red-blooded Redbeard comrade has fallen for the prodigious nose on a Gnome girl. Before you know it, you have a daughter in law whose hobbies include creating explosions and baking candy cane pies.
We are lucky really, stone doesn't burn well and they don't fancy critters who sport beards, so we only have to worry about being murdered and having our belongings stolen.
Fortunately a good punishment expedition every few years works and keeps them raiding our belongings the next few.
It's really a good development that there are now Free Folk in Urr. City Free Folk in general stop being the homicidal maniacs. There truly is not all that much difference between city Free Folk and the human city dwellers.
You come here destroying peace, disrupting trade. Let me remind you of the ancient Dwarven proverb. 'Today is a good day for someone else to die'
On the other hand. There are consistent rumours that the prince can offer us a better live than the current city of Urr…
